Overview

A different buying rhythm

A transformer is specified early in a project and delivered late. Between those two points sit the impedance, the vector group, the losses, the enclosure and the documentation the client will ask to see.

We handle transformers as project equipment, quoted against the rating and the documentation. That means the enquiry starts with the rating and the standard, and we confirm what documentation exists for that rating before a price is issued.

Where the required documentation is not available for a particular size or type, you will hear it at enquiry stage, while there is still time to choose a different route.

Why there is no table here. Ratings, losses and dimensions vary by manufacturer and by order. A specification table would suggest a uniformity that does not exist, so each transformer enquiry is quoted against the documents for that rating.

Typical project requirements

What we need to quote a transformer

Eight items. The first four decide the equipment; the rest decide whether it can be delivered and connected on schedule.

01

Rating

Apparent power in kVA, continuous duty and any overload condition the process requires.

02

Voltage ratio

Primary and secondary voltage, tapping arrangement and the tolerance the network allows.

03

Vector group

Dyn11, Yyn0 or another connection, together with the earthing arrangement on the secondary.

04

Impedance

Short-circuit impedance as a percentage, usually set by the fault level downstream.

05

Type

Dry-type or oil-immersed, and whether the installation is indoors, outdoors or in a confined space.

06

Enclosure

IP rating, ventilation, cable boxes and the clearances the site can actually provide.

07

Standard

The design and test standard the project is built to, and whether third-party witnessing is required.

08

Documentation

The type test, routine test and drawing set your client expects to receive with the equipment.

Recommended equipment

Equipment we review at enquiry

Each of these is quoted after review. The list tells you what we can look at, not what is on a shelf.
Control transformersMachine and panel supply
Small single-phase and three-phase units that step the supply down for control circuits, usually inside or beside a panel.
Reviewed per project
Isolation transformersGalvanic separation
Separation between supply and load for sensitive equipment, medical or laboratory installations, or where the network requires it.
Reviewed per project
Distribution transformers11 kV and 33 kV class
Dry-type or oil-immersed units for plant substations and building distribution, with the vector group and impedance set by the network study.
Reviewed per project
Related power equipmentReviewed case by case
Stabilisers, packaged substations and similar equipment are considered when they belong to the same scope, and only where the documentation position is clear.

Technical considerations

Points that decide the price

Transformers are sensitive to details that look minor on a specification sheet.
Losses and efficiency
No-load and load losses affect the purchase price and the electricity bill for the next twenty years. A cheap unit with poor losses is an expensive unit.
State the limit
Temperature rise and cooling
Ambient temperature, altitude and cooling method decide the temperature class, and whether the unit can be installed in the space available.
Site conditions
Transport and handling
Weight, dimensions, lifting points and the route from the port to the plant room. A unit that cannot enter the building is not delivered.
Plan early
Testing and witnesses
Routine tests are standard; type tests and third-party witnessing are project-specific. Both affect schedule and cost.

Usually part of the same scope

A transformer rarely travels alone. Most projects also need the distribution equipment downstream.

Send the rating and the standard

With the kVA, the voltage ratio, the vector group and the standard, we can tell you quickly whether this is a scope we can support, and what documentation comes with it.
